Ukiyo-e Kanagawa Surfing.

The Great Wave Takes Shape

This art model brings the dramatic imagery of Katsushika Hokusai’s “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” out of the print and into three dimensions. The towering wave, white foam crests and layered shades of blue capture the unmistakable energy of the celebrated Japanese woodblock print. Rather than recreating it as a flat image, the design turns the composition into a sculptural piece that rewards viewing from different angles. Despite the original name “Kanagawa Surfing,” the set does not depict modern surfing and is simply inspired by Hokusai’s artwork. Its focused palette and powerful silhouette create a striking balance between motion and calm. The result is a familiar masterpiece reimagined as a distinctive display object for your shelf, desk or cabinet.

The build uses 1,497 pieces, beginning with a stable base before shaping the wave layer by layer. Numerous small elements, curved forms and offset surfaces create the rolling body of water and its finely tapered foam. Smooth sections alternate with exposed studs, translating the lines and texture of the original print into brick-built form. At approximately 25.6 × 19.2 × 14.9 cm, the finished model remains compact while gaining impressive presence from its depth. This is a static composition devoted to shape, colour and visual rhythm rather than mechanisms or play functions.

The set is particularly well suited to adult builders, art lovers and admirers of Japanese culture. Its nearly 1,500 pieces provide a focused project that you can enjoy across several relaxed building sessions. No conventional minifigures or animals are included, allowing the sculptural wave to remain the undisputed centrepiece. Once complete, it works beautifully on its own or alongside other art and Japan-inspired models. A printed manual guides the build, while Pantasy also provides access to digital PDF instructions through its support service.
