Cold War engineering in miniature

Bring one of the Cold War’s defining armoured vehicles to your building table in a remarkably compact format. Introduced into Bundeswehr service during the 1960s, the Leopard 1 embodied a tank concept built around mobility and firepower. This model captures its low hull, distinctive turret and long main gun through a deliberately condensed design. Muted green and grey shades, combined with tactical markings, give it the composed appearance of a military collector’s model. Even at this small size, the silhouette of the real vehicle remains instantly recognisable. The result is a concise journey into European engineering history that asks for very little display space.

You build the 1:72 scale model from 147 pieces, with the construction focused entirely on the vehicle’s exterior. A solid hull core comes first, followed by the running-gear area, upper deck and separately assembled turret. Sloped elements and sideways-facing connections recreate the Leopard 1’s characteristic angles within the limited footprint. The turret rotates, while the movable gun lets you adjust the model for different display poses. Printed tactical details add carefully placed accents to the otherwise restrained surface.

The manageable piece count and printed instructions make this an approachable project for young tank enthusiasts aged six and over. Adult collectors also gain a compact desk model and a natural addition to a line-up of 1:72 military vehicles. No minifigures or animals are included, keeping every part of the build focused on the tank and its profile. It stands out neatly on its own, yet fits just as naturally into space-saving dioramas or organised vehicle collections.
