The flying swallow, built in bricks

This model brings an unusual Japanese Second World War fighter into your collection. With its elongated nose and liquid-cooled inline engine, the Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien looked markedly different from the radial-engined aircraft commonly used by Japan at the time. Its name, “Hien”, translates as “flying swallow” and reflects the aircraft’s slender, graceful profile. It served as a fighter in the Pacific War and was also used to intercept Allied bombers. Its distinctly European appearance initially caused Allied observers to mistake it for a foreign design. The aircraft later received the Allied reporting name “Tony”.

As you build, the construction gradually recreates the defining proportions of the historical aircraft. Its narrow fuselage, extended engine section, broad wings and conventional tail shape the finished model’s appearance. A selection of shaped elements translates the original curves into recognisable brick-built geometry. The result is a medium-sized aircraft model that combines visible technical structure with a distinctive outline. The build stays focused on the fighter itself rather than surrounding it with extensive scenery or secondary structures.

The completed model is aimed primarily at aviation enthusiasts, adult collectors and older builders interested in aircraft engineering. On display, it adds an important Japanese design to a collection of Second World War fighters. It also remains manageable enough to pick up and examine from different angles.
